"There is no right to deny freedom to any object with a mind advanced enough to grasp the concept and desire the state." - isaac asimov.

my favorite writer of all time.

in which i am at a loss for words

i was going to a locksmith this morning. i was on motor, heading to venice. when i got to the intersection, there was stuff in the turn lane. as i got closer, it was a motorcycle with glass everywhere. as i got closer, there were legs poking out from one side.

i snapped this picture.

i didn't know what to do. but my first instinct was to document it. as i passed him, it looked like he had a large red ball at the end of his body. no one had covered his head. i imagine the crash must have just happened.

i really didn't think too much of it at the time. i'm a very logical person. death is part of life. but i find myself reflecting on it tonight. i still had a good day at work even tho i didn't have great sales, and even tho i should've seen this moment as a portent of things to come.

this is the second dead body i can remember seeing. my uncle being the first. i don't recall seeing my grandfather. i might have... but i don't recall it.

i worked a boeing party tonight at knotts berry. it was actually a lot of fun, and i made some great drawings. i also really felt like i hit my artistic stride tonight. ... well quality wise anyways. i still need to work on my speed. but i feel like i did some really good caricatures. i kept meaning to take pictures of them, and just never really got around to it.

oh well.

i also started coding again yesterday. i'm working on my file editor again. trying to ajaxify it. making decent progress. luckily, most of the infrastructure is already coded. just certain things that need to be reworked.

i hate waiting.

in which i seriously haven't used this in a while
July 31, 2008, 6:49 am

so like, i've been weird and busy and doing other things.

i went to my very first comicon. it was great. i got to hang out with bryan, and i think i creeped out his wife. I LOVE YOUR BOOTS HOPE, that's all... i got to meet becky and vasilis. and becky totally drew me, and then wrote in my yearbook. i got my yearbook signed by a bunch of the flight crew too which was sweet. and i met reagan, who was also sweet. i got to see grant and allison, and i looked at other scoundrels from afar, but everyone seemed busy, and i hate bothering people. and then i tagged along with bryan to the spaced panel, and we weren't gonna go in, so we went and got pretzeldogs, but then they called us back and they totally snuck us in, and we got to sit in the front row, and it was totally awesome, and i thought that was like the coolest thing ever.

... and then there was the after party. i was at comicon with my friend andy franzen, who is writing the comic i am desperately trying to ink right now. and his girlfriend is friends with a girl who works for this UTA company that apparently reps for ONI press. so he got invited to this after party through this line of fortunate connections. when we got there it looked like we wouldn't get in, because we weren't on the list, but we did get in, because apparently someone didn't show up, so we used their slot. so we're at this party, and it's all industry people, and then suddenly stan lee shows up. and then masi oka (hiro from heroes) shows up. and then suddenly it's a star studded event. the heder twins show up and are talking up sarah silverman. and then justin long is there, and then hiro and sylar are having a drink, and then i lose place in the night. i remember getting in the car, and i remember going into my bed. but that's about it.

and now i am trying to ink the best things i've ever inked. which is hard, because i haven't done that much. but these have to be great. my art has to nail this pitch, as much as andy's story does. but i think his stuff is great. his story is worth telling. it just remains to be seen if my art is the best way to tell it.

also, dr horrible is sweet. if you haven't seen it yet... you like... should. it was off the net for a while, but now it's back up on hulu. totally worth your time if you like musicals, or joss whedon, or aren't a stupid douchebag.

yeah. i think that's a good wrap up.

... oh and i'm in LA now. if you're here, give me a ring, let's hang out and stuff.

in which i like toys
April 21, 2008, 10:03 pm

ok, so i have a free phone right now. it's nothing special, i didn't need it to be. but i do a lot of typing on it, and it'd be nice to have a keyboard phone. which is why when i started seeing those lg/ironman commercials, i pretty much fell in love with the new lg voyager. look at it, it seems to be totally biting the iphone at first, with it's touchscreen front, and big buttons on that, but when you flip that bitch out and have a full qwerty keyboard in the middle, that's something else entirely.

when i got my first phone, i was like, i don't need a camera, i have one. i don't need a mp3 player, i have one. i don't need a keyboard, i have a computer. but man. this thing is so sleek, and the fact is, it's nice to have all that stuff in one device. especially if that device is made by anyone other than apple. it sucks carrying a phone, a camera, and my mp3 player. there's only so much real estate in one's pants. this phone doesn't even come out until like christmas, but i already want it. it's definitely on my wishlist.

i'm sure it will cost something like 300 bucks, but i believe i'm willing to spend that on a nice toy for myself.

also, i hate all apple products. all of them.

in which i watch movies
April 21, 2008, 7:49 pm

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." -men in black.

so i saw cloverfield tonight. i liked it alot. the creature was bizarre, and i have no freaking clue what it was or where it came from, or what it's motivation was. and that's alright. i'm not afraid to leave a theater (read: my room) with a few questions left in my head. i'm kind of mad at who survived longer than who. i feel like all the characters got taken in sort of a reverse likability order.

but that's not what i'm mad about. i'm mad about this post on the imdb forums. "this movie deserves to be shown in full screen but the studios has only decided to release 'anamorphic' widescreen copies." THIS PERSON REPRESENTS EVERYTHING WRONG WITH OUR SOCIETY TODAY! deserves to be in fullscreen? are you shitting me? you deserve to have your moving picture privileges REVOKED. fullscreen is not better, folks. you don't like those black bars? I DONT LIKE HAVING TO MISS OUT ON ONE OF MY THREE AMIGOS, BECAUSE FULLSCREEN ONLY ALLOWS ME TO SEE TWO AT A TIME! i don't like having to switch between lando and han because fullscreen can't handle the glory of the millenium falcon AND two actors at the same time. i don't like having to sift through glossy fullscreen dvd covers to find my scuffed, dull cover of the gloriously widescreen copy of the movie i want to see. i hate that everytime i go to walmart, they have a two movie dvd of the neverending story, and the neverending story II AND THEY'RE BOTH IN FULLSCREEN!

it irks the shit out of me. STOP IT.

mpaa, STOP pandering to the stupid people. fullscreen televisions aren't even produced anymore, i hope. why would they be? hey, maybe some people like seeing only 4 out of 8 horses during the chariot race in ben-hur. but the discerning viewer deserves better. i am that viewer, and i can't wait for the day when fullscreen movies are a thing of the past.

no fullscreen version of cloverfield? thank you jj abrams. you are the author of my contentment.

in which i dream
March 26, 2008, 4:42 pm

clint mansell is the composer of my dreams. and when i say that, i don't mean that he is my best choice for a composer. no. i mean that when i hear his music, i am instantly transported to my dreams. when i dream, i hear his music, and when i hear his music, i dream.
